4 Signs your air conditioner needs to be repaired

It’s the hottest time of the year, and after some outdoor fun, you can’t wait to get into your cool, air conditioned home. You open the door, expecting to be refreshed, but it’s as muggy inside as it is outside. Your air conditioner has stopped working, and it needs to be repaired fast.

Here are four common signs that you need professional help with your AC unit.

  1. Ice on the refrigerant line

If you find ice on your air conditioning unit, it could mean you have a leak in your refrigerant line. If this is the case, the leak will need to be located, sealed, and then the refrigerant will need to be recharged (the technical term for refilled) to the manufacturers specifications. It’s very important that a professional does this type of repair. Leaks of this type can also cause bubbling or hissing sounds, or can make your AC blow hot air into your home.

  1. Blowing hot air

Hot air coming from your vents during the Ottawa summer can indicate a few problems, some of which are worse than others. If you’ve checked that your thermostat is set correctly, then the cause could be your compressor. If your air conditioner isn’t running efficiently, it can cause the compressor to fail. If this important part of your AC is broken, you may hear high-pitched screaming sounds.

  1. Loud sounds

Loud noises can indicate that your air conditioner needs to be repaired. If your unit is banging or clicking, something may be stuck inside. If this is the case, turn it off until the obstruction is removed. If there are loud screeching or squealing sounds, a component of the machine may need to be replaced. In all cases, it’s best to have a professional come look at your unit.

  1. Moisture

While small amounts of water or condensation around your air conditioner are normal, especially on hot or humid days, excessive amounts of water are not normal. If water is leaking from your machine for more than 24 hours, or it continues to leak when the machine is turned off, then there’s a problem. There could be a clogs or cracks in your drain or condensate lines, or in your condensate pan.
