5 Signs You Need to Have Your Boiler Inspected

Using a boiler to heat your home or commercial property has undeniable advantages. They use less energy to heat the space, provide consistent heat, don’t dry out the air and are relatively low maintenance compared to furnaces. However, just because there are no filters to clean or replace doesn’t mean you can just ignore your boiler. After all, the last thing you want is for it to stop working unexpectedly.

Luckily, there are some warning signs you can look out for that indicate your boiler needs to be inspected — and maybe serviced — by a professional. Here are five signs to look out for.

1. Strange sounds. A boiler that’s in good repair shouldn’t make much noise. If you hear clanking, banging and whirring sounds, this could indicate that there’s a problem with the pump or fan.

Whistling or gurgling noises may mean that the water pressure in the boiler is too low or that it’s “kettling.” This happens when salt and debris become trapped in the heat exchanger, restricting water flow. When this happens, pressure can build up, potentially causing your boiler to rupture.

2. Bad smells. If your boiler is fueled by natural gas or oil, be on alert for metallic smells. These could indicate a fuel leak, which could be a fire hazard. The faint odour could also indicate that your boiler is not burning properly. This could be a sign of a carbon monoxide leak, which is dangerous for the health of your family or employees.

3. Higher heating bills. If your heating bills have risen without a change in outside temperature or how much you use your boiler, it’s probably not working as well as it should. This can be caused by a number of different factors.

4. Leaks. In order to work properly, your boiler needs to operate on a closed loop that keeps water and steam in. Water leaks are a sure sign that too much heat is escaping the boiler.

Have your boiler inspected yearly
Even when they’re working efficiently and without issue, residential and commercial boilers should be inspected and serviced once a year. This makes sure that they function as they should, keeping you warm through our cold Ottawa winters.
